To celebrate the end of their recent construction project, the employees and residents of Miller’s Merry Manor in Fort Wayne hosted an Open House and ribbon cutting for the community on February 9 in the healthcare facility’s new rehabilitation gym, featuring “Real. Life. Rehab.”—an innovative approach to therapy.

Construction began in September to launch improvements to the rehabilitation campus and services, including the expanded philosophy of rehabilitation, duplicating many real life situations to help individuals successfully transition to home following a variety of surgeries and illnesses. The new 1,656 square foot addition includes a full kitchen and laundry area so that patients can practice cooking, washing dishes, making coffee, and folding and hanging laundry. This helps build balance, cognition and motor skills.  A fully functional bathroom with standard tub will allow patients to practice using a variety of assistive devices to get in and out of the tub while working on endurance.   The specialized flooring is a softer surface with a rubberized backing that provides more cushion to minimize noise, impact on joints, and potential injury from falls.  The standard bedroom with recliner will allow the patient to practice getting in and out of bed.  Making the bed will help build balance and range of motion.  Simulating tasks that the patient will need to be able to perform when they go home is our goal.  That’s why we call it Real Life Rehab.

Miller’s Merry Manor has been a part of the Fort Wayne community since 1984. Since that time, thousands from the Allen County area needing rehabilitation and nursing care have been served by the healthcare facility. “It has been and continues to be a privilege to work hand-in-hand with dedicated physicians and other providers to care for our neighbors. Each year around the State, our employee-owners work to get over 2,500 patients back home to their families and friends after their recuperation stays. Making important enhancements like these will help us continue to fulfill our mission even more effectively,” stated Patrick Boyle, CEO. Jacob Morris, Administrator of the Fort Wayne Miller’s Merry Manor healthcare campus, added “We’re excited about this project and the opportunities it gives us to expand the therapy and support services we offer. It will also allow us to serve our patients in new ways. We have changed the way we think about and carry out our rehabilitation programs through the types of activities we select, the equipment we use, and the floor plan we have designed. We want to get people back to where they most want to be—home.”
