Message from the CEO
January 19th, 2009
I want to congratulate all of the employees at Miller’s Merry Manor, the premier nursing homes and rehabilitation Centers, in Mooresville, Indiana (Morgan County) & Garrett, Indiana (DeKalb County). Recently, both staffs at these Miller’s achieved a feat that is very special, something that many nursing homes may never experience – a deficiency-free annual survey from the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH). We’re proud to work with dedicated employees like these who are passionate about people and enthusiastic about doing their jobs well. Thank you for serving ‘America’s Greatest Generations’! Congratulations and keep up the good work!

The Arbor Transitional Care Unit on the campus of Logansport Memorial Hospital is scheduled to re-open in early January, 2009 under the management of Miller’s Merry Manor. The 21-bed Medicare unit will serve individuals for short-term rehabilitative care following a hospital stay at Logansport Memorial or neighboring hospitals.
“We appreciate the opportunity to work with the Logansport Hospital administration and are grateful for their assistance with this new venture,” stated Patrick Boyle, President and CEO of Miller’s Health Systems. “The unit will be under the direction of Senior Administrator, Jennifer Gappa, R.N., and we look forward to working with the team that has been put together to handle the day-to-day operations.”
Known as the “The Arbor Transitional Care Unit by Miller’s Merry Manor”, the unit will provide a bridge for patients between the hospital and home or extended care, allowing them to continue their therapy and skilled nursing care in a convenient and familiar location. “We believe this is a valuable service to patients in the Logansport community, and we’re pleased that Miller’s will bring their experience in post-acute care and rehabilitation to the space we carefully designed for this purpose,” stated Brian Shockney, CEO of Logansport Memorial Hospital.

After a year and a half of construction and extensive remodeling at Miller’s Merry Manor – Tipton, move-in time has arrived. This week, residents from Autumnwood at Tipton Hospital began moving into their new accommodations at Miller’s Merry Manor, just adjacent to the hospital campus.
Simply calling the changes at Miller’s Merry Manor “new accommodations” hardly begins to describe the modifications throughout the building, which bears little resemblance to its former appearance – both inside and out. “With the completion of this major project, this campus now ranks as one of the largest in our company,” stated Patrick Boyle, President and CEO of Miller’s Health Systems. “The hospital administration and community have been outstanding during this transition, and we thank them, along with the residents and their families of both Autumnwood and Miller’s Merry Manor for their support and patience,” stated Boyle.
Upon arriving at Miller’s Merry Manor, the differences in the building are immediately apparent with a new front entrance, roof design, and other architectural enhancements, along with a view of the second-story addition. Through the front doors, visitors are welcomed by a grand hall and inviting lobby, with administrative offices around the perimeter. Indirect lighting and greenery emerging from the open wall design are an integral part of the airy appeal of the entry view. From here, visitors can easily access the newly designed Private Rehabilitation Suites, equipped with flat screen TVs, DVD players and sleeper-sofas for guests. These Medicare-certified suites lend a fresh, comfortable atmosphere to those needing short-term rehabilitation for a variety of conditions including orthopedic, neurological and cardiovascular issues.
The newly-constructed Rehabilitation Center features a large exercise gym utilizing state-of-the-art therapy technologies, private treatment rooms and therapy offices. A unique feature of the Center is the Rehab-to-Home Training Suite, built to mimic features of a typical home setting including kitchen, laundry, dining, bedroom, and bath areas. The Suite’s design assists rehabilitation patients making the transition to home, and offers therapists the opportunity to re-familiarize residents to real-life situations while still in an assisted environment.
One of the most distinctive features of the new Rehabilitation area is the Wellness Center; complete with a 21’ x 21’ heated therapeutic swimming pool, fitness room, and men’s and ladies’ locker rooms. In the future, the Wellness Center will be open to the public, offering use of the facilities, exercise classes, and other related activities. A canopied private entrance was included to give easy access to community visitors.
Just a short distance down the hall is the Private Rehabilitation Dining Room and Apothecary Lounge, where residents and their visitors can enjoy soda shop-style treats including ice cream with hand-made waffle cones, milk shakes and other favorites, in addition to the Premier Dining experience. The dining room is one of three new large group dining areas along with 2 private dining areas built for use by residents, friends and families.
Additional amenities of the project include new resident rooms, two fireplace lounges, a beauty shop offering a full array of salon services, a large courtyard gazebo, Direct TV in resident rooms, a new Movie and Activities Room, and tasteful new décor throughout.
Planning is underway for an Open House to be held in January. Those desiring more information about the changes at Miller’s Merry Manor—Tipton can contact Troy Clements, Administrator at 765-675-8791 or by email at TiptonAdm@millersmerrymanor.com.

Recently, I read of a challenge to think of 5 things every day that you’re thankful for and to write them down. The author said that doing this will change our perspective by keeping us focused on the positive things in our lives. So in honor of Thanksgiving, here is my list:
- I’m thankful for my family – not all of which are blood relatives, but are, instead great friends that I’ve chosen to include as members of my family.
- I’m thankful for the “enoughs” of life – enough heat, enough food and water, enough shelter and enough clothing. So many are not so blessed.
- I’m thankful for the privilege of meaningful work, and for having the opportunity to impact lives of residents and staff in positive ways at the times when they need us the most.
- I’m thankful for the freedoms we enjoy here in America – the freedom of speech, the freedom of religion, the right to choose those who will govern us, the right to agree and disagree with one another, and all the other things that make our democracy so desirable.
- I’m thankful for the privilege of living in the greatest country, one that gives us almost unlimited opportunities to achieve success if we’re willing to use our God-given abilities, work hard and keep a positive attitude.
I challenge you to make a list also. You might find you have much more to be thankful for than you think. Happy Thanksgiving

Miller’s Merry Manor is the area’s premier nursing home, rehabilitation provider and senior healthcare leader in New Carlisle, LaPorte and South Bend, Indiana. By achieving another annual deficiency free survey from the State Department of Health (ISDH); the residents and staff have accomplished a goal very few nursing homes in Indiana will ever experience. This is the second straight year the staff have attained such a tremendous achievement. We are very proud of the compassion, dedication and hard work shown by our staff as they care for and serve America’s Greatest Generations, our seniors. Keep up the great work!

It’s Veteran’s Day, a day set aside to honor all the members of the Armed Forces who have served our country both at home and abroad. On November 11th, 1918 at 11:00am., fighting ceased in WWII. On that date in 1921, the United States, France and England honored those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the “war to end all wars”, and from that time on, Armistice Day—renamed Veteran’s Day in 1954—was born.
Somewhere throughout our company, we could likely find a resident or staff member who has served in each conflict since Korea. They each may have entered the service for many different reasons, but in the end, their service has protected us and kept our country safe. We can thank them for preserving our way of life, and today we want to honor them and all of those, past and present, who have served bravely on behalf of each of us.

With the election over, it’s good to get the last year behind us and move forward in putting together a plan for the future. Undeniably, changes will be brought about by the new Administration. Some will be positive and some possibly may not seem as positive. Regardless of who we may have voted for, we each have a responsibility to work to make our communities and country the greatest they can be. The best way to accomplish this is through a renewed commitment to work cooperatively for the good of those who depend on us – our residents and our employees.
