Message from the CEO
May 22nd, 2009
Graduation Congratulations!
It’s the time of year when we get to offer our congratulations to all of our employees who are graduating. I’ve always been inspired by people who take on the challenge of bettering themselves through education – many of whom are balancing a home, children, and work along with it. This is a huge task that requires tremendous commitment and dedication. We’re proud of our employees who’ve achieved their education goals this year, including High School graduates, those earning special industry-specific certifications, our nursing and college graduates and even a few who’ve earned Master’s Degrees.
At Miller’s, “Growth” of the person—both personally and professionally—is one of our core values, and the growth of these individuals makes our company better. We applaud those employees who’ve worked diligently for this great accomplishment!

May 10th – May 16th – National Nursing Home Week
Each year, the American Health Care Association (AHCA) declares a theme for National Nursing Home Week. This year’s theme is “Nurturing a Love that Lasts”. According to the organization’s website, this year’s theme “will encourage all to think of generations of parents and grandparents nurturing future generations to carry on life and family traditions. A supportive and caring environment, such as a nursing home, nurtures and enables residents and families to continue growing, learning and teaching through various ways.” (www.ahca.org)
Why not take the opportunity this week to visit a friend or family member in a nursing home. Your presence and support will honor the residents and will make their day even brighter!

May 10th – Mother’s Day
For many of us, our memories of “Mom” are good ones. She was there to comfort us when we fell down, or broke up with a friend; she celebrated with us when we were learning to read, and when we got the job we wanted; she was someone we could count on for the good days, and the bad ones as well. One of the real pleasures of spending the last 25 years in long term care has been getting to know many mothers. Through the years, I’ve been encouraged by the wisdom of the ladies living in our buildings. Often they share with us the vivid memories they have of raising their children, and their experiences—though usually decades past—seem strikingly similar to what we’re facing, and their insight encourages us.
I want to pay tribute to all the Mothers in our company, whether you’re a resident or an employee. Be assured, your influence on all of us is more important and lasting than we can ever express. Thank you!

May 6th – National Nurses’ Day
I want to take this opportunity to recognize the work of those involved in the field of nursing, and specifically the nurses in our company. We employ nearly 800 nurses and we admire the skills that they demonstrate, and the compassion they show to our residents each day. Some began in our company as nursing assistants in their teens and took advantage of one of our education programs to achieve their goals. We applaud each one who made the commitment to enter this field. During this time when healthcare is constantly changing, one thing remains the same – nurses are very exceptional people!

The Arbor Opens in Logansport & is now accepting patients!
I’m pleased to announce that the Arbor Transitional Care Unit has opened under the management of Miller’s Merry Manor. The 21-bed Medicare unit, located on the campus of Logansport Memorial Hospital, serves individuals for short-term rehabilitative care following a hospital stay at Logansport Memorial or neighboring hospitals.
The unit is under the direction of Senior Administrator, Jennifer Gappa, R.N., Zach Krumweid, Administrator, and Kiley Nason, Director of Nursing. Through this service, we’re happy to bridge the gap between hospital and home for patients in the Logansport community.
If you would like more information, you can reach The Arbor by phone at 574-725-3000 or by email at ArborAdm@millersmerrymanor.com

Thanking our Volunteers:
As part of National Volunteers Week, I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to thousands of individuals who give their time all around our company and in the communities that we serve. These are people of all ages who unselfishly visit friends who are under the weather, deliver Mobile Meals, participate in church programs and Bingo parties, write letters, organize blood drives, work in hospital auxiliaries, and contribute to our communities in countless other ways. Without volunteers, many great organizations would be rendered ineffective, and much important work would never be done. We’re thankful for our volunteers and for all they do to make Miller’s an even better place for our residents.
Thanks to each one of you!
