When the Iraqis went to the polls for the first time last year, the eyes of the media and their audiences were watching intently. Seeing those ink-stained fingers—the sign that an individual had cast his vote—was a forceful reminder of the courage and determination that freedom often requires. We were reminded that the founders of our independence were called on to participate in similar acts of bravery.
Voting is one of the most important qualities that distinguish the United States and most of her allies from other countries of the world. We get to choose who will lead us at each level of our government through our right to vote. This basic freedom is one of the liberties that we fight for on behalf of other countries—like Iraq—the right to have a part in determining their future by choosing their leaders. If we take the time to observe the countries that don’t share this component of freedom, then we begin to see that voting is not just a right. It’s a privilege and it’s a responsibility.
As a company, it’s our duty to keep in contact with our elected officials and share with them the great job being done in our buildings, along with the challenges we face. We communicate to them what we think they need to do to help us. We all also need to do our part by voting.
Sometimes it’s confusing to know who to vote for, or it’s easy to think that your opinions and votes don’t count or just don’t matter. Sometimes it just seems like too much trouble to vote. But on November 7th, many of our leaders will be elected and important decisions will be made by citizens who want to have a part in choosing their future, the future of the work they do, and the future of their families. Don’t let them choose for you. Take advantage of this privilege and responsibility. Vote. You’ll be proud you did!
